With Glowing Hearts the movie
As Vancouverites are well aware, there have been billions of dollars spent on bringing the 2010 Winter Olympic Games to our fair city. However poverty advocates in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside are asking just where the homeless and working poor fit into this grand scheme.

The documentary film, With Glowing Hearts, directed by Andrew Lavinge and produced by Jon Ornoy, follows a group of people who are assisting those left behind to have their voices heard via the use of popular social media tools like twitter and facebook.

SYNOPSIS: WGH-is a story about a revolution, one of social change and a paradigm shift in media representation. Vancouver sets the stage, against the backdrop of the 2010 Winter Games, for our documentary about a marginalized community embracing social media tools to empower, inspire and breakdown the digital divide. This is a project that I am directing and is being produced by animalmotherfilms.com. Shot on various capture devices including the Red, the HVX 200, the 5D MkII and the Nokia N77 cellphone. We began shooting Feb/2009 and will continue through March/2010….look for more footage to appear…soon. Enjoy
The website accompanying the film, WGHTheMovie.ca, as well as a blog, webisodes and more information about the film has brief interviews with some of the players. One interview of note is with April Smith (@aprilfilms on Twitter) of AHA Media. April has had many of her own struggles that she has overcome partly through the discovery of her love of and being able to use her creative passion and desire for a better life by using her love of social and digital media to give back to her community in Vancouver’s DTES.
Here April talks about twitter:

The latest webisode highlights the folks at True North Media House, featured are two local social media gurus, Vancouver photographer Kris Krug (@kk on twitter) and his counterpart story maker and social media activist Dave Olson (@uncleweed on twitter):

This is one storyline, that of the TNMH from the documentary ‘With Glowing Hearts’. We follow Kris Krug and Dave Olson as they try to build an independent Media Center for ‘Socilamediaist’ from around the globe for the Olympics in Vancouver in 2010.
The film wraps up shooting after the games in March of 2010. Personally knowing a few of the players in the film I am excited about seeing the finished product.

The Animal Mother lads are doing noble work documenting the social change in the community in light of the Olympics and other economic and cultural situations. Interesting so far having them following along and being the fly on the wall at meeting and meetups.
We at AHA MEDIA and the rest of the Vancouver Downtown Eastside are very happy that Andrew Lavigne and Jon Ornoy of Animal Mother Films are filming us throughout the year… It has been a very rewarding experience to be documented with all our highlights and tough times. They are helping to get our social media messages of all our social justice issues across in a way that we couldn’t do ourselves, and for that we are extremely grateful! They have touched the lives of thousands in the Downtown Eastside and have ultimately changed our lives for the better!
